March 18th - 21st

First off, I reallly like the website. Secondly, this will be my first trip to Tunica and I was wondering what to expect? I have been to casinos in: Illinois of course, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Las Vegas
(about 2 times a year),and  Mesquite. Where should we goto gamble, eat, drink, etc.? Thanks, Mike
WILynn

I hope you enjoy your first trip to Tunica.  For your first trip, you'll probably want to sample many or all of the casinos to see where your favorites are.  Tunica is really a gambling town.  There are 9 casinos pretty much plunked down in the middle of cotton fields.  Although there are some attractions, including the outlet mall, the Riverboat Queen and Museum, and nearby Memphis, it is pretty much gambling there.  There is entertainment there, but not on the Vegas scale.  Hopefully you'll have access to a car there to get around, as the shuttle between the casino's has been terminated.  If not, I believe Harrahs has a car rental service on site.  (Harrahs did, last I heard, have a shuttle between Harrahs and Horseshoe/Sheraton, which are Harrahs properties)

Everyone has their favorite casinos, for different reasons.

Harrahs-obviously owned by Harrahs.  Is the largest casino in Tunica.  I believe they have 3 hotels.  One is "attached" to the casino by a covered walkway.  The others require a shuttle bus or car to get to and from the casino.  I believe the buses run every 5 minutes or so.  Paula Deen's buffet is there and I thought it was very good.

There are 3 casinos within walking distance in Casino Center:

Sheraton-owned by Harrahs.  It's a smaller casino that I used to play in quite a bit, but really don't go to as much.  Lots of changes have been going on there, as in much of Tunica.

Horseshoe-also owned by Harrahs.  Very popular for table games.  They have a lot of good concerts there.  The buffet there consistently ranks in the top for buffets.  I've never eaten at the steakhouse there, but heard it was good.

Gold Strike-An MGM property. The tallest property in Tunica.  The lobby is beautiful, with kind of a vegas-like feel.  (Not the long walks to the rooms like Vegas though)  Gold Strike has a food court (with free wifi), buffet, Atrium Cafe (open 24 hours), and steakhouse.  I've heard the poker room there is nice. I believe Gold Strike is also going to be opening an "ultra-lounge" in the near future.

Bally's-A Resorts Casino.  The hotel there is not attached to the casino.  Property has a shuttle bus to transport.  Kind of looks like a big barn.  It's out "on it's own" like Harrahs.  I really haven't played there much.

Fitz-Also on it's own.  An Irish-themed castle.  It's also got a more intimate-locals feel.  The remodeled rooms there are very nice.  Fitz has a buffet (usually fairly good and open 24 hours), a cafe with limited hours (which is usually good, but service can be spotty) and a steakhouse which is pretty good. You can usually find table games at lower limits at Fitz.

Sam's Town-A Boyd Property.  I really haven't played there a lot in the last few years.  They also have a food court of sorts, I believe they have Corky's BBQ on their buffet.  If you're willing to make a longer, and somewhat dangerous walk across Highway 61, you can walk to Resorts and Hollywood from there.

Resorts-A Resorts property. Across the highway from Sam's Town.  Mostly slots there.  Easily the "queen of the mailers" as they mail out offers all the time, which I'm sure makes it a favorite of the locals.  I've only eaten at the buffet there, which I'd rate as ho-hum.

Hollywood-Right next to ResortsHas a lot of Hollywood memorabilia.  Even a moat in there.  Others here have spent much more time at Hollywood.  For some reason, I just never have been able to "warm up" to it, but it's been a favorite for others.

All of the casinos serve free drinks to those who are playing.  (Don't forget to tip).  I believe there are bars in most of them.  Some of them are more private than others.

As I said, everyone has their favorites, and they often change.  Currently my favorites now are Fitz and Gold Strike.

aboard Mike.

I think Lynn, did good overview of the casinos for you.  Eating is an on and off thing it seems. One time you go and the food is great and the next time maybe not.  There are plenty of eating places and if you like BBQ they have some good Corky's BBQ at Sams Town buffet.
I think the Graceland tour would be fun and they have a Beale street tour also that you might enjoy.
Again welcome to the board.

Mike I leave the singing to others (that can  sing).  Sorry maybe someone here has a clue where.  I know there is a bar/pizza place in a strip mall going over to Sam's Town, Hollywood and Resorts area that had a sign out Karaoke.

Being a karaoke host for the last forever years I always find one place to sing atleast one song. I am way too quiet and shy.... Thanks, Mike

Karaoke  . . .  not it that much hurry for a report but we go back n April, 2009.

HERE IS MY 1st Trip Report to Tunica . . . . . it s also posted on http://tunicams.yuku.com/forums . . . . which is another super TUNICA web site.
There are other things I report on there also . . . .

We finally went on our 1st 'free' Harrah's Tunica junket out of Myrtle Bech, SC on 1 March 2009. I was skeptic of the 'free' . . . but it was FREE !!!! Going again free in April. Stayed at the Terrace Hotel which was very nice. The trip was flawless and they take care of all your luggage !!!
I am not much of a 1 cent slots person . . . but the .25, .50, 1.00 reel slot machines were just no paying what I thought they should after so many spins. My wife will sit at Wizard of Oz with $100 and hope to win . . . did not happen. She did very good (lucky) on a 'Glitz' machine. She also played the ONLY one 'Dean Martin' slot (same as 'Glitz' with different symbols) until it mezmorized her with the songs . . . . . she did not do so good.
I like to be within speaking range of her so I sat 2 machines from her at a 'KaBoom' 1 cent machine. Two . . TWO hours later I cashed out wih a $400 ticket. I put 100 dollar bill in to start and it was sooooooo hot !!!!!! Had a real good time with that one. I guess I need to pay more attention to these type of machines. I WILL NOT play those 8 line slots that my wife throws her money into and never wins big. Now she gets lucky when she goes to a machine she has never played . . . . . like the one she won on the last morning before we left. It was a 'Kiss the Frog' type thing video slot. Hits $200 on the 2nd spin with 30 nickels in. She got "kiss the frog bonus" and hit 4,000 coins. Made the trip home very bearable. I went with $600 and came home with $450 . . . . so I was happy with that.
That's it . . . . . until end of April 2009 . . . and I will report back then.
karaoke mike

Nice. Did you stay only at Harrahs? Any good eats? Any thing else of mentioning? What were the table limits? Were the majority of the machines what value? Thanks, MIke
Guest

We stayed only at Harrah’s Casino ‘Terrace Hotel’. We only played at Harrah’s this last trip.  We ate at ‘Paula Deen’s buffet which I thought was “ok”.  The small snack bar in the casino was awful.  We did well at the slots with holding our own with money management.  DID NOT come home with less than we went with . . . . .

If you go to the Horseshoe Casino  (a short shuttle away) and play a slot machine or game for 30 minutes they will comp you a 24/7/24 hour buffet ticket.

There are a gazillion slots to play. . . . all kinds of denominations . . . .everywhere . . . . and different ones at each casino. Table games at Harrah’s are $10 up. . . . .  and cheaper at the ‘Shoe’ I have heard.  We will visit there in April.  That is why I would like your ‘TRIP REPORT’ before we go . . . . . and of course anyone else’s.

We really enjoyed ourselves at the Harrah’s casino.  We look forward to going to the Horseshoe, Sheraton (Harrah’s property)  and Gold Strike Casinos (these 3 are right next to each other) on our next trip.  Do not hear much about the Gold Strike . . . . . and we try to stay loyal to a Harrah’s property.  Make sure you use your casino rewards cards.  Very . . . VERY important !!!

We go to enjoy . . . play conservative (well we try) and just have fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WIN
Jean

Thank you for the fun trip report Rich.
Sounded like you had a nice trip and the wins kept you in the green.  I've never stayed at Harrah's in Tunica, only because I prefer to just take the elevator to the casino.  I have stayed at the Horseshoe and liked it very much.  Plus you have two other properties in close proximity to visit for playing or dinning options. Two of which are Harrah's properties.
We tried the new Paul Deen buffet on our last trip and enjoyed it very much. The Horseshoe has an awesome buffet also.
Good luck on your next trip, and I look forward to your report on it.
WILynn

Oh . . . nuts !!!!
We are going April 21-24, 09.  Man am I sorry we will miss you guys !!!!!  Oh well . . . I will load up the machines for you.   . . . . . or maybe unload !!!  THAT would be nice.  This trip will again be at Terrace Hotel but we plan on seriously investigating the 'Horeshoe' and 'Gold Strike'.  I have seen very little chatter on the 'Sheraton' . . . or for that matter the Gold Strike.  Everyone seems to like the 'Shoe' . . . . so we will check it out.
ontheopenroad

Rich,

I personally like the Sheraton.  It's a Harrah's property, so if you're a Total Rewards member, you can earn and use points there.  The Sheraton is small, so there is not as large of a selection of machines as some of the other properties.  But it seems that the customer service has been better and faster there than some of the other places.  Plus, I seem to win better there!

It's all about preferences.
GaPam

Rich,
Thanks for the trip report.  Sounds like a great time and getting to come home with most of your money is definitely a plus.
Can't wait to hear about your next trip.  Looks like you'll be there right before us.  Good Luck!
