Rave: Even with its faults, what a wonderful country it is.Happy Fourth Of July
Damon Stewart
.
Americans, I wish you a happy Independence Day.
Today, we celebrate in our forefathers patriotic way.
They knew whence their freedom came but we're wondering where ours went.
Was it that we took for granted, that which was hard won and Heaven-sent?
.
Out Country's has been tried, pushed to the brink, time and time again
And each time it seemed it could not return, to what it once had been.
But with blood, guts, Yankee sass and Grandpa, (With friends who had joined him),
Return it did! Freedom's light kept growing bright while other lights grew dim.
.
In the eighteen-sixties the new world was nearly torn apart
Our country had almost perished from it's broken and bleeding heart.
Vicksburg, Bull Run and Shiloh, where good men fought against their brothers,
Dealt harsh and bitter blows which wounded deep and scarred it like no others.
.
Then, Over There in Europe, again the Mighty Eagle roars
As it is forced to fight what now is called The War To End All Wars!
Those same nations rose again and threatened the freedom that we knew;
From half-way 'round the world the Evil Axis brought World War, number 2.
.
Police actions and Civil unrests have called on Uncle Sam
To face bullies in Korea and then again in Viet Nam.
Many times we've traveled far and wide to cover some country's back
Or dethrone a heartless tyrant, in Africa, Asia or Iraq.
.
We have sent our young ones off to war, marching with so much pride
And then seen them march home, still proud, but grieving comrads who had died
In service to homeland and the world, answering their duty call.
All had sacrificed. Not one was left unscathed, and they are heroes, All!
.
After two hundred years and more, our country's still the greatest!
It's sad that some don't know history, except the "Altered" latest.
History's "Facts" should be known to all; the entire world should be told
Why we celebrate this day and honor our heroes, both young and old.
.
Today's our country's birthday; a noble cause to celebrate!
I'm here early for the parade... I find my vantage point and wait.
The band plays "Stars and Stripes!" and I salute as the flag passes by.
"Happy Birthday!" I shout, and "Thank you,God!" wiping a tear from my eye!
