Turn RightWoman follows GPS, gets stuck in snowmobile trail
Published - Apr 01 2009 07:01PM CST
A motorist relying on a GPS navigation unit found out the hard way that technology is not always the answer. Sheriff's officials said a woman was driving when the best routing from the GPS sent her onto a road that forked into a snowmobile trail. Several miles down the frozen path she stopped and couldn't turn around in about a foot and a half of snow surrounding the car.
She called 911 at 10:44 a.m.
Deputy Keith Svoboda said it took a while to find her and much longer to get heavy equipment in to free the vehicle. Deputies dropped her at a motel for the night.
Svoboda said the lesson is, "People shouldn't believe everything those things tell you."

I can relate. One night when driving home from Tunica, I set my GPS to take me home the shortest route, just to check it out. It took me down gravel roads, extremely curvy secondary roads, and I think what must have been an abandoned logging road! It was far from being worth the two or three miles I might have saved on the regular way I go.
My GPS is a Uniden Maptrax 350, and the map software was out of date when I bought it, with the highway that goes from Hernando MS over to Hwy 61 near the casino's, isn't even on it. I called Uniden the other day, and was informed they didn't have an update available, and wasn't planning on one. Looks like my next GPS unit will be a TomTom.

I experienced this my last trip to Harrah's with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009, sent me on an adventure across an unpaved forestry service road over the side of a mountain. I'll stick with interstates from now on
